What is Sciatica?

When people visit our clinic and believe they have sciatica, the first step is to assess whether they actually have the condition as it can be confused with low back pain or another form of musculoskeletal pain. Sciatica originates from a nerve that runs from the lower back down through the legs. Pain occurs when this never becomes irritated or compressed, which is what we refer to as “sciatica.”

The most common causes of sciatica are issues with the lumbar spine, such as vertebrae moving slightly out of place and pinching the nerve, or bulging or slipped discs pressing on it. This pressure can cause pain that radiates from the lower back down to the ankle or even under the foot, depending on the severity. Sciatica is often triggered by poor posture, repetitive activities, or improper lifting techniques, which can misalign the hips or lumbar spine.

What are the Symptoms?

Sciatica symptoms can vary widely, from a mild ache to sharp, burning pain or even a sensation resembling an electric shock. Pain is typically felt on one side of the body and may worsen with prolonged sitting, standing, or certain movements, such as bending or twisting. In severe cases, sciatica can cause muscle weakness, numbness, or tingling in the affected leg or foot. If you do experience weakness, you may find it difficult to walk, climb stairs, or perform simple everyday activities.

As a result, these symptoms can severely impact day-to-day life, as your mobility will be severely limited, and your daily routine will be disrupted. The discomfort may also affect sleep quality, leading to fatigue and reduced productivity. Emotional well-being can suffer too, as persistent pain often leads to frustration or stress. Early treatment and tailored physiotherapy are essential to manage symptoms, restore function, and prevent long-term complications, helping you regain control of your life.

What Is Our Approach To Treating Sciatica?

To treat sciatica, we use a combination of techniques in a single session. We begin with acupuncture to reduce inflammation and pain, making it easier to address mobility. Once the pain subsides, we move to physical therapy, where we manually correct any misaligned vertebrae or musculoskeletal issues. The relaxed state achieved through acupuncture makes these corrections more effective, as stiffness and tension are reduced.

In addition, we address the whole body – not just the affected area – ensuring a full-body realignment. This approach strengthens the overall structure, preventing further complications in areas like the shoulders, neck, knees, or ankles, which can be impacted by sciatica. By rebalancing everything from head to toe, we facilitate long-term healing and recovery.

We also provide targeted exercises to build strength and flexibility, helping you maintain alignment and prevent recurrence. These exercises are customised to your needs, ensuring you can safely return to your daily activities. By integrating these treatments, we aim to not only alleviate your current pain but also empower you with the tools to stay active, mobile, and pain-free in the future.
